Cáceres, Antioquia – A double homicide has shaken the municipality of Cáceres in the Bajo Cauca region of Antioquia, following the murder of two men this Saturday in the Puerto Bélgica corregimiento. Preliminary reports indicate that armed men opened fire on the victims while they were in the settlement, resulting in their deaths.
One of the victims, Jorge Ávila, was known in the community for his work as a "promoter of non-violent communication" in areas with Territorial Development Programs (PDET), supported by USAID and other organizations. It has been revealed that Ávila had expressed concerns for his safety to close friends, anticipating a possible attack against him.
The identity of the other victim has yet to be confirmed, and authorities are expected to provide more information in the coming days. This tragic event has generated unease in a region marked by the presence of illegal groups, particularly the Clan del Golfo, which has undergone recent leadership changes and directives, sparking tensions within the community.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and the potential motivations behind this act of violence, as the local population lives in a climate of uncertainty and fear.
